Cassette Comeback

The classic cassette tape is making a comeback.

Storage demands for huge quantities of data are greater than ever and the cassette could prove an unlikely saviour. Hard drives are historically the heart of large storage operations, but now new tape capable of packing information at incredibly high densities, while using less energy, could replace them.

Researchers at Fuji Film and IBM have built prototypes that can store 35 terabytes of data on a cartridge just 10cm by 10cm by 2cm, which is the equivalent of about 35 million books of information.

Who knew that we would be edging towards going back to the cassette for storage?
