All web pages ‘are 19 clicks away’

As we continually update and promote our website we found the following article very interesting:

According to new research, no two pages on the web are separated by more than 19 links.

Well-connected websites such as Facebook, Google and Reddit mean even the most obscure of cyberspace’s estimated 14 billion pages and one trillion documents.

The finding is based on study of the web created by Albert-László Barabási, a Hungarian physicist.

He found that no matter what slice of his simulation of the web he looked at, it was always possible to move from one page to another in 19 clicks or fewer.

The finding has been compared to the “small world” experiment, which found Americans were linked by an average of between five and six others.

According to Smithsonian magazine, Professor Barabási credits the small world of the web to humanity’s tendency to organise based on region, country and subject area.

Research on Facebook recently found that the original small world of interpersonal links has shrunk. Most of the social network’s users have only four degrees of separation from each other.

So, it really is a small world!
