Creating make up, using 3D Printing!

Well we’ve been saying that the possibilities of 3D printing has been endless and so far we haven’t been disappointed. Grace Choi, CEO of a company called Mink, has created a 3D printer that allows users to create their own make up.

Although the printer is currently an early development, with the final printer said to cost around $300 and be the size of an Apple Mac Mini. The printer will allow users to choose their desired colour for eye shadow, lipstick, blusher and so forth, as well as creating the make-up compact. The printer uses cosmetic-grade dye (FDA compliant) and prints the colours onto a powder substrate (the raw material of make-up). There we have it, make-up ready to apply!

The product is said to be targeted towards women aged 13-21, as these females are likely to be still experimenting with make-up colours and techniques. However, we see a much more promising future for this product. What if make-up artists invested in this product for runways and catwalk events or photo shoots? What if the printer could go that step further and actually apply the make-up also? Imagine having your own personal make –up artist everyday!

The CEO, Grace Choi, says she intends to build women’s self-esteem with this product by allowing them to experiment with their style, without the expensive price of buying a product just to try it and finding out it doesn’t actually suit. Currently Mink is a start-up with only one employee – the CEO. However, if this trend becomes popular enough in not only consumer use but also industries, such as fashion, retail and health and beauty, who knows where Mink will be in even five years?! What do you think?
