Windows 8.1 Update 1: Pending success or failure?

Microsoft have announced another Windows 8 update to be released at the beginning of April this year, despite their first Windows 8 update only being launched 5 months ago.

The new update attempts to get critics on board with their new operating system. When the new concept Windows 8 launched in 2012, it received heavy criticism that the user interface was not very user friendly at all. The Windows 8 concept is based around touch-points, whereby apps and programs regularly utilised are only one click away, to save users having to go through the lengthy traditional ‘click Start, select Programs’ routine. The new concept follows a similar design as the Windows phones; however, on a small touch screen the design appears much easier to use.

The Windows 8.1 Update 1 makes the original Windows 8 interface much easier to use for those who seem to be struggling to understand its’ functionalities and design. This update appears to be addressing the issue that has caused a dispute between Microsoft and its customers; with many previous Microsoft owners claiming Windows 8 is poorly designed and taking the decision to purchase elsewhere.

Microsoft’s Windows 8 update will see new features such as the power button and search button next to the user’s picture and name; with many users claiming they are confused with where these currently are (these are normally hidden but can be found by hovering the mouse over the right hand top or bottom corner). Microsoft has also made it easier for users to personalise their home screens by re-introducing the traditional drop down menus, when right clicking on an icon.

Microsoft intends to use this update to get customers back on board. We find Windows 8 an interesting concept, that takes a while to get used to.  However, once you’ve spent some time getting to know it, the new operating system is easy to grasp and soon you will no longer think about how you used to use a computer desktop. What do you think?
