Epson offers WiFi Direct printing from tablets, smartphones and PCs

Epson has unveiled a new range of Small-in-One printers with WiFi Direct support. This enables users to print directly from WiFi-enabled devices, without having to go via an access point. The range of compact all-in-one devices offers the ability to print and scan from anywhere within WiFi range.

Automatic WiFi setup makes configuring to print and scan wirelessly easy, according to Epson. Every model in the range is able to automatically find the relevant connection settings in order to configure itself.

All models are compatible with Epson’s iPrint, which allows users to print wirelessly from smartphones and tablets using a downloadable app and Epson’s Connect cloud print service. All of the models, apart from the entry Expression Home XP-212, also allow users to print from anywhere in the world by emailing photos and documents directly to the device.

Epson UK product manager Simon Hanly said: “More users than ever before are using mobile devices, so we’re always looking at ways we can offer greater printing flexibility. In addition to WiFi, Epson Connect and Google Cloud Print, we now have WiFi Direct, which allows users to print directly from their smartphone, tablet PC or wireless laptop directly to their printer.”

We have our reservations though. As mentioned in one of our blogs last month, security breaches cost British businesses billions of pounds every year. How safe is this data once it is at the printer?

We hold the view that for someone to leak information, it takes a motive, as well as an opportunity. By putting the right technology in place to ensure sensitive documents remain confidential, organisations can block this opportunity at source.
