3D Printing: A Procreating Printer

We’ve been following the 3D printing trend for a while now; excited to see how it is rapidly developing. It seems that the trend is quickly gaining attention and has been named 6th of the most expanding industries in 2013. It also seems that major software companies have caught on quickly, eager to stay ahead of the game. Microsoft now provides 3D printing support on their Windows 8 operating system, as it has been reported that the costs of 3D printers are becoming a more affordable product.

In particular, our attention has been attracted to a specific 3D printer, The RepRap, which is retailing at only £400. This printer has been engineered to print itself; effectively enabling the printer to procreate. The idea that a printer can create more of itself endlessly is astounding and would mean that no company could dominate this market, as every 3D printer has the same possibilities.

It is an incredible concept that every household and workplace could have a 3D printer in the near future.  It could revolutionise the way everyday products are made and potentially see the transition of businesses creating products in-house as opposed to outsourcing them. This has never seemed more realistic than with the addition of easily accessible 3D design software, like Google SketchUp.

With this technology rapidly evolving, who knows where this will go. We are excited and believe this stage is merely a stepping stone in such a fast-paced industry. With talk of 3D printers being used to create prosthetic limbs, concept cars, jewellery, chocolate and musical instruments, we’re intrigued to find out, if you had a 3D printer in your home or office, what would you use it for?
